Celebrating 50 years in business

Managers take over at established Plainmoor firm.

ONE of Torbay’s best-known businesses has two new women at the helm after 25 years in the same ownership.

Sandra Winsor and Christine Cocker have taken over ACB Office Services, a payroll and book-keeping bureau in St Marychurch Road, Plainmoor, following the retirement of Arthur and Jill Flanders.

Since it was first established nearly 60 years ago as the Adding and Calculating Bureau, ACB has looked after the payroll, book-keeping, VAT and monthly management figures for large and small firms alike — oiling the wheels of Torbay commerce.

Sandra and Christine met while working for a local chartered accountants — Sandra as accounts manager and Christine as bureau manager.

“We just decided it was time for a new challenge in life,” said Sandra, “And this great opportunity came along to buy a long-established business with a reputation for excellence.

“We are looking forward to getting to know all our existing clients and meeting lots of new ones as well.”

The ladies will be greatly helped in this by keeping on the existing staff of Barry Francis, David Thomas, Joe Bostock and Karen Dawson.

Christine added: “Working with the same staff ensures all our customers a seamless changeover — and they’re a really nice team, which helps.

“We will continue running ACB along the same lines as the past, but will injrect new ideas and add additional accounting services in the future.”

Both Sandra and Christine are working towards their qualification for the Institute of Certified Book-keepers.

Sandra said: “Book-keeping, payroll and VAT can be a real drudge for any business, when they could be concentrating their time and effort on what they do best. That’s where we come in.

“All our services can be completely tailored to the employers’ needs.”
